Libraries of Things Directory

Libraries of Things are popping up all over the UK. This page gives a brief outline of what a library of things is and how they work.

Plus we have a directory and map of all the Libraries of Things around the UK - now over 100! Don't miss the links to Repair Cafe directories too (scroll to the end of the page).

A Library of Things is an organisation which loans out items to members of its local community, promoting a sharing economy. These items can be anything and generally include DIY tools, garden machinery, kitchen appliances, camping gear, event equipment and generally useful household items.

The benefits of borrowing items from a Library of Things rather than owning them are multiple:

  • we free up space in our homes
  • save money by paying a fraction of the purchase cost
  • ensure items get a full life of use
  • reduces over-manufacturing and material usage
  • reduces waste and carbon emissions.

The impact on the planet of our existing consumer habits is unsustainable. By borrowing and sharing instead of buying and owning we reduce our collective impact on the planet and ensure the amount of waste is kept to a minimum. Manufacturing processes along with disposal and recycling processes are all carbon-emitting problems that we need to address if we're to tackle the climate crisis.

The UK's first high street library of things emerged as a pilot in south London in 2014 who shared their learnings with a group who set up SHARE Frome in 2015. A SHARE network spread around the country and there are now many independent libraries of things, and some with the SHARE name. A support network of libraries of things is being set up - find out more on the Facebook group.

If you have a new library of things to add to the directory please contact Ethical Consumer (and select 'website problem' so that your email will go direct to the web editor) and provide the information as set out for existing schemes.

If you are thinking about setting up a new Library of Things please read this top 10 list of tips of how to create one.

We have created a map and a directory of the known Libraries of Things in the UK.

(The above map of Libraries of Things doesn't have some entries (about 13) in due to incompatibility of addresses between public info and Google! This is an ongoing work in progress. The full list is below.)

Share and Repair network

A Share and Repair network has been set up by Circular Communities Scotland charity in collaboration with Edinburgh Tool Library and Edinburgh Remakery. It is funded jointly with Zero Waste Scotland and the Scottish Government.

Share and Repair network focuses on sharing libraries and repair projects. Its website has more information including a map of all the locations (currently 28). Some of the libraries listed above are in this network.

Lend and Mend hubs in Scottish public libraries

In 2023 nine public libraries in Aberdeen, Angus, Edinburgh, Inverclyde, Midlothian, Orkney, Perth, North and South Ayrshire established Lend and Mend Hubs to help their communities to repair, reuse, rent and upcycle everyday items. The library services will offer free access for everyone to keep items in use for longer, rather than them being thrown away.

Each library hub is also introducing an education programme to support new skills development, helping to reduce inequality through equitable access to resources.

The project is funded by The John Lewis Partnership’s £1 million Circular Future Fund and is being managed by the Scottish Library and Information Council (SLIC) where you can find a list of the new Lend and Mend hubs.

Lending and repairing for a brighter future

RE:MAKE Newport opened its doors in October 2021, bringing repair, reuse and borrowing to the high street of Newport, South Wales.

Since then it has saved people over £56k, and over 25 tonnes of carbon. Read on to find out more about how a Library of Things benefits people, planet and places.

A first in Wales, RE:MAKE is a project jointly managed by Repair Café Wales that support pop up repair cafes across Wales and Benthyg Cymru, who support the development of Libraries of Things in Wales.

RE:MAKE provides a valuable service helping residents reduce waste, save money and ultimately encourage a different way of living. Residents can call in 5 days a week to borrow one of 475 items held in the Library of Things catalogue; items such as carpet cleaners and gardening tools, camping equipment and giant Jenga! So far, there have been 1995 borrows which have saved the community over £56k compared to buying from new.

As Fran Williams, Library of Things Manager at RE:MAKE explains:

“Borrowing is about more than saving money. It brings equity of access, promotes a shared sense of ownership over goods and can help people clear space in their homes and ultimately buy less! Amazingly, the borrows in Newport have saved over 25.1 tonnes of carbon too – so the impact for our planet is not to be underestimated!”

The same ethos goes for the repair side of RE:MAKE. Since opening, 1346 products have been through the volunteer repairers' hands with an 80% repair success rate. They’ve seen everything come through their doors from everyday essentials like toasters and kettles to Santa riding a motorbike!

The repairs are about more than getting items fixed; they are also an opportunity for people to come together and learn new skills, either from the repairers themselves or in one of the many workshops and school activities that are held on-site and outreach events.

Pheobe Brown, director of Repair Café Wales explains:

“Here in Wales, there is a real push towards a Circular Economy, and the RE:MAKE project, funded by the WCVA’s Nationally Significant Landfill Disposals Tax Communities Scheme demonstrates how that aspiration can look at the community level.”

Phoebe concludes:

“RE:MAKE is essentially about behaviour change and community. The more we can bring people together, help them share resources and keep items in use as long as possible, we challenge our culture of consuming and throwing away, and ultimately can start to build a brighter future for all.”

Other sharing ideas or single category libraries

Someone shared (!) a single category sharing scheme with us on Facebook: Tentshare. You can join as either someone lending or borrowing a tent.

And don't forget the original library ... of books! All public libraries lend books for free, and nearly all also have free e-books, e-audio books, e-magazines and music and films to borrow. Many have magazines and newspapers you can read in the library too. All local authorities in the UK have to provide a public library service so check out your nearest branch (some offer mobile library or at-home services for those who can't reach a branch library).

Repair Cafes

Several of the libraries of things are located with/run by local repair cafes. There are a couple of directories you can search to see if there is a repair cafe near you:

Also look out for men's sheds as these focus on sharing skills and learning whilst making and repairing items.
